Teresa will be reading “Stand Like a Cedar” by Nicola I. Campbell and illustrated by Carrielynn Victor. Stand Like a Cedar is about Pacific Northwest Coast Salish children learning about nature from their elders. The workshop is best suited for elementary school age children with caregivers welcome to attend. Special needs are also welcome and highly encouraged!
The class will begin by reading the story, transition to a discussion about how children can care for their environment as the Coast Salish people in the Pacific Northwest have. Live Cedar bark and branches will be brought in for children to look at, touch, and smell.
Children will be provided with a Field Study Art Kit to take home, that will include a waterproof “Common Bees of Western North America” guide, Watercolor Pencils, “Pocket Guide to Mixing Color”, a Mini Art Journal, Paint Brush with Water Barrel, and a packet of Milkweed Seeds. Children will decorate and personalize their Field Study Art Kit in class with permanent paint markers and stencils provided by the teacher.
